Introduction to Atmospheric Dynamics

ATMO 303: Introduction to Atmospheric Dynamics (UH Mānoa)

Instructors: Jingxia Zhao, Sen Zhao, Licheng Geng

This course provides an advanced quantitative introduction to the fundamentals of modern dynamic meteorology. Students will explore the elementary principles, descriptions, and interpretations of large-scale atmospheric motions underlying weather and climate systems.

In the Fall 2024 semester, I served as a co-instructor for this course. The topics I covered

  • Structure of the Static Atmosphere
    • The Hydrostatic Equation
    • Pressure as a Vertical Coordinate
    • Generalized Vertical Coordinates
  • Kinematics of Atmospheric Motion
  • Basic Conservation Laws
  • Equations of Motion in Spherical Coordinates
